Major
tree vandalism was reported to have taken place after midnight on 2000-12-11 and 2000-12-12
on the Beaumaris foreshore between Reserve Road and Burgess Street, Beaumaris
(Melway 86C9). Several large trees have been felled in front of and just to
the south of the bare residential site shown in the 1998 photograph below,
which now has two of its three lots built on.

Bayside
Council staff inspected the damage, and later erected a sign on the Beach
Road edge of Beach Park advising the public that Council will provide a $10,000 reward for information leading to a
conviction of the perpetrators of the damage. This is the same type of sign
already in place on Beach Park near Banksia Street, near Sparks Street, and
near Tramway Parade, Beaumaris, all of which are there because of similar attacks.

The damage
consisted of the felling, by sawing, about a metre above ground level, of :

  • 1 Black Wattle (Acacia mearnsii)* The
diameter where it was sawn was 430 mm.

  • 1 Coast Banksia (Banksia integrifolia)* The
diameter where it was sawn was 550 mm.

  • 1 Coast Tea Tree (Leptospermum lævigatum)* The
diameter where it was sawn was 220 mm.

  • 1 Eucalyptus
species (not indigenous to the foreshore) The diameter where it was sawn
    was 330 mm.

  • 2 other large Coast Banksias had limbs lopped off.

* Asterisk denotes species of tree
indigenous to the Beaumaris foreshore.

People
that attended the auction of 418 Beach Road, Beaumaris, advertised for
2000-12-17, near this scene of devastation, might like to commiserate with
the new owners, who are alerted on the sign on the front of the property to “… magnificent beach views from
wrap around balconies and living zones …”,
about the fine
vegetation and effective shelter from cold southerly winds they will now be
deprived of.
