Support

for Including Ricketts Point Marine Sanctuary in
National Parks Bill

Members of Beaumaris Conservation
Society Inc, Port
Phillip

Conservation Council Inc, and other supporters
of the proposed Ricketts Point Marine Sanctuary, led
by Mr Bob Whiteway, which was recommended as Proposal
B9 in Part
3

of the Final Report of the Environment
Conservation Council of Victoria
, were among
some 150 people that gathered in support of the
Ricketts Point Marine Sanctuary Proposal, which was
addressed by the Mayor of Bayside, Cr Simon Russell;
the President of Port Phillip Conservation Council
Inc, Geoffrey Goode; and others on World Environment
Day, 5th June 2001, at Ricketts Point, shown in the
photograph below.

The above groups sought inclusion of
the Sanctuary proposal in the National
Parks

(Marine National Parks and Marine Sanctuaries)
Bill 2002. That Bill, and its
Schedule 8, Part 10, included the Ricketts Point
Marine Sanctuary in the resulting Act whose operation
commenced in November 2002. It is hoped that the
Victorian Government will submit a new version to
Parliament later this year.

Port Phillip Conservation Council Inc. has
supported the views of BCS Inc. in its letters to the Minister for Environment and
Conservation
, and to the Shadow
Minister
.
