1. Present:

3. Candidates for Council:
Eight candidates for Wards 8 and 9 attended.

Each spoke for 3 minutes summarising their views on local issues.

4. Aims & Actions of the Society:
Val Ross summarised the following:

4.1	Conservation and restoration of Indigenous Flora and Fauna	Actions to include:	· encourage friends groups · retention of Community Nursery · reintroduction of residents kits · regular displays at local shopping centres of indigenous plants.

4.2	Protection of Natural Landscape & Seascape	Actions to include:	· election of councillors with a strong Landscape & Seascape conservation position in their platform · petitions as required · maintain record of cleared blocks.

4.3	Eliminate or Prevent Pollution	Actions to include:	· support C.S.I.R.0. study · refer also 4. 1 · encourage formation of friends groups

4.4	Oppose Inappropriate Development	Actions to include:	· oppose inappropriate planning applications · lobby local and state government for changes to planning policies in Beaumaris · increase membership to 1000 to be effective lobby group · set up best development award in Beaumaris

4.5	Preserve the Local Leafy Character	Actions to include:	· lobby local and state governments to provide adequate space for planting vegetation · survey missing street trees and encourage council to replant · be vigilant throughout Beaumaris to enforce tree protection.

Val Ross asked for comments on the above – no replies.

5. Zone Leaders:
Val Ross outlined role and called for nominations.

Zone 5 – Frank de la Rambelya

Zone 6 – Mrs Madeline Meehan and Brian Dixon

Zone 8 – Vivien Kluger

6. President’s Report:
Val Ross outlined activity since last General Meeting including the Following:

Meetings with Murray Thompson MLA and Peter Betess, senior public servant, concerning the loss of our leafy character.
– Permit objections
– 408 Beach Road
– 438 Beach Road

– New members after Rob Gell meeting – 128

– New members in last two weeks – 188

That amounted to a total of 316.

Projects for 1997

– Best development award
Significant tree register – 60 over all Bayside and 4 in Beaumaris.
Suggested all present write to Commissioners asking if significant trees they know are on the register.

7. Petitions:
Val Ross asked all present to sign the two petitions concerning the loss of our trees.

8. Resident Comments:
Mr John Howells, of 28 Clonmore Street, has been opposing a 3 house development in Hume Street at the rear of his property. The development has been going on for over 12 months. It kept changing causing confusion. He has taken his case twice to AAT. During this time he has developed some experience and offers his assistance to the Society for future inappropriate developments.

9. Beaumaris Conservation Conservation Society for Incorporation:
To be discussed at next meeting on 9 April, 1997. All members will be circulated with objectives of the Constitution and copies will be available on request at least 4 weeks before meeting.

10. Ouestions for Candidates:
Numerous questions were asked of the candidates including:

– membership of political parties.

– time of residence in Beaumaris.

11. Appreciation:
Chris Duffy, Vice President, thanked all candidates for council in coming along and for members and visitors also.

Val Ross added her appreciation of all those in attendance.

Meeting closed – 9.22 p.m.
